Tips for Packing Your Clothes Before A Move
We’d love to help you move!
Clothes are easier to pack than other belongings, since they aren’t fragile and don’t take up too many boxes. However, sorting through clothes and packing them up can be a difficult task. If you’re struggling to pack your clothes or just don’t know where to start, here are a few tips to make the process easier.
Decide What to Keep
Start by going through all your clothing and deciding what to keep. You might find you’ve been holding onto clothes you don’t like or can’t fit into anymore, and this is the perfect chance to weed those items out of your wardrobe. This process can be mentally tiring, so take some breaks. Start with one part of your wardrobe, like shirts, and slowly go through all your clothing. If you can’t decide whether or not to keep some items, make a pile for them and come back to it later.
A great way to decide the fate of a clothing item is to ask whether you’ve used it in the past 6 months. If you haven’t, ask yourself if it has sentimental value. If you can answer ‘yes’ to either of those questions, hold onto it. If the answer to both is ‘no’, get rid of it.
Don’t Get Rid of Sentimental Items
Sentimental items don’t need to be thrown away just because they aren’t useful anymore. Wedding dresses, letterman jackets, and even Halloween costumes might have a story attached to them. If something makes you happy or reminds you of a good memory, it isn’t useless and it deserves to be held onto.
Sell or Donate Clothes you Don’t Want
Once you’ve made your pile of clothing you don’t want, you can sort through them again to figure out which ones you can sell. Trendy, unique clothes are more likely to sell, and you can put that extra money towards your move. Anything you won’t be able to sell can be given to friends or donated to your local thrift store. You don’t have to sell any of your unwanted items, but it’s a great way to collect some extra moving money if you have the patience for it.
Sorting and Packing Your Clothes
Once you’ve narrowed your clothing down, it’s time to sort and pack. You have many options for sorting your clothes. You can sort by clothing type, season, or material, or any other way you can think of. Sorting will make the unpacking process much easier, especially if you label your boxes.
How you pack your clothes really depends on your personal preference. Cardboard boxes are easy, but they aren’t weatherproof and they might fail during the move. Suitcases can protect your clothes, but you’ll need to pack them tighter and use more of them. Consider different ways to pack your clothes and decide which one will work best for your move.
