D-Town’s Ultimate Moving Checklist
Moving is stressful. We’d like to make your move a little easier with a checklist to bookmark or print.
1. Lighten your load
- Get rid of anything you don’t need
- See if friends or family want anything you’re getting rid of
- Set aside items to sell and items to donate
- Consider a garage sale for neighborhood’s that allow them
2. Moving supplies
- Hammer and screwdrivers
- Packing paper, bubble wrap and packing tape
- Ziploc bags and Saran Wrap
- Cleaning supplies and trash bags
- Get extra boxes from local grocery or liquor stores
- See if you have original boxes for your electronics
- Home Depot and Lowe’s sell moving boxes
3. Early Preparation
- Research professional moving companies
- Pick the right moving day (weekends are more expensive)
- Create a moving to-do list
- Put moving tasks on your calendar
- Sort things by category
- Map out the best route to your new home
- Schedule disconnect times
- Call in any favors
- Pack decorative items a few weeks out
- Pack as much as possible ahead of time
- Begin deep cleaning projects
4. The week before
- Change your address at the Post Office
- Stop buying groceries
- Pack all but a week’s worth of clothes
5. Packing

- Create a number system and label moving boxes
- Use small boxes for heavy items and large boxes for light items
- Use packing tape to prevent boxes from opening
- Protect fragile items with packing paper, bubble wrap, or blankets
- Pack dishes vertically Cover toiletry bottles with Saran Wrap
- Put your storage bins and luggage to use
6. Preparation
- Finish any deep cleaning projects
- Pack a clear plastic box with things you’ll need on-hand
- Pack a personal overnight bag
- Take pictures of your electronics
- Make copies of important papers
- Defrost your fridge at least one day before you move
- Take pictures of your new home before moving in
7. Moving Day
- Load boxes from the same rooms together
- Load heavy furniture into the truck first
- Final sweep for forgotten items, emptying trash, and cleaning
- Delegate tasks when you’re unloading the moving truck
- Make the beds first
- Provide food and drink to friends and family helping you
